Is Health Food Really Junk Food In Dusguise

Walk into any health food store, grocery store, or mass merchandiser store and you'll surely find a vast assortment of healthy nutritional bars somewhere in the store. They claim to pack a nutritional punch and give you the necessary nutrition and nutrients you need when you are on the go. But is it really that good for you? I say 'NO!' Especially if you stop to read the ingredients in some of these.

Now let's look at one of the more popular bars. A bar that is aimed mostly at women who are trying to eat healthy and trying to lose weight. The Slim Fast Bar. You don't have to go very far in the ingredients list to see that this bar is junk! The first ingredient is High Fructose Corn Syrup! Next was a special syrup, which is just a way to cover up that they put more sugar in it. Add in some partially hydrogenated oils which equals one thing-Trans Fats, and then just a bunch of artificial flavoring and sweeteners. Seriously, I would rather you ate a Snickers Bar. At least then you'll be getting peanuts, skim milk, and egg whites as well as the junk. And it will taste a lot better.

Then, of course, are the bogus claims by the manufacturers: 'The Slim Fast Plan cuts your calories and helps provide the nutrition you need to stay healthy while you lose weight and keep it off...' I'm sorry, nobody needs High Fructose Corn Syrup, Trans Fats, and Artificial Sweeteners in their diet. Period!

And this is just one company. I'm telling you right now, read the nutrition labels and ingredients list. Even if you think it is healthy, or it says it is healthy. 95% of Food and Supplement Companies have one thing in mind-To make more money! They will cut costs however they can, even if it means deceiving you and putting crap in their products.

So how do you tell what nutritional bars are good for you? Well here are some general guidelines to follow if you are looking for a Meal Replacement Bar or one for weight loss:

- Needs to have at least 175 calories. Anything less won't be enough calories to get you to your next meal.

- Should offer 4 grams of protein or more. Protein mixed with carbs and fat are better at filling you up and giving the satisfied feeling. Plus protein should be eaten every 2-4 hours regardless.

- Minimum of 3 grams of fiber. Fiber also has the tendency to make you feel full longer. You should be shooting for 24-36 grams daily. -Stay away from ingredients like High Fructose Corn Syrup, added sugar, partially hydrogenated oils (Trans Fats), and added artificial sweeteners.

- Limit saturated fats. No more than 4 grams per bar.

Hope this helps. Organic ingredients are also a big plus in a bar. Health food stores like Trader Joe's and Whole Foods offer some excellent choices. Some good bars out there are Lara bars, Prograde Cravers, Perfect 10, and Organic Food Bars.

Some Ways To Master Stress

The following are some categories that can be helpful in mastering stress:

Change stressful situations.

  • Time and money management.
  • Assertiveness.
  • Problem-solving.
  • Possibly leaving a job or a relationship.

Change lifestyle habits.

  • Decrease caffeine (coffee, tea, colas, chocolate).
  • Well-balanced diet.
  • Decrease consumption of junk food.
  • Eat slowly.
  • Regular exercise (at least 30 minutes, three times per week).
  • Adequate sleep (figure out what you need, then get it).

Then, you can return to deal with issues feeling more rested and in a better frame of mind.

Fitting Fitness Into Your Busy Schedule

By this point, we should all know about the benefits of exercise and living a healthy lifestyle. Yet finding the time to incorporate a fitness program into our daily lifestyle can be difficult and sometimes disappointing! Here are a few tips that will help you fit fitness into your busy schedule. Whether you're just starting out or been at it for years, the following will be beneficial to you.

Don't Ride! Walk!
How many times do you find yourself frustrated while sitting in heavy traffic, waiting at a stoplight or trying to find a parking space? Chances are, you could have avoided that frustration by leaving your car keys at home and walking to your destination. Stop using your vehicle to take short trips and start walking instead. That convenience store at the corner is just a quick walk away and won't take that much more time than driving would. Not only will you get some fresh air AND a little exercise, you'll save some wear and tear on your car as well! You can also use this time to clear your head and enjoy being outdoors.

If your destination is just too far away and you do have to drive, try to park as far away as possible. That little bit extra can go a long way and remember it all adds up!

Don't Chain Yourself to Your Desk!

At work, we often find ourselves sitting in front of a computer for very long periods of time. Wouldn't it be nice to "take a break" and still get some work done? Instead of calling one of your office mates to deliver a message, walk over to their desk and hand-deliver it. This is an excellent way to stretch out those stiff muscles after sitting down too long.

If there is an elevator at your office, don't use it! Granted, if it's more than 6 flights, you are probably ok taking the elevator. But if it's less than that, take the stairs. Climbing the stairs will get you some great exercise and you'll still get to the next floor faster than your co-workers who are still waiting for the elevator. Plus, you can avoid that uncomfortable elevator silence!

Another way to add exercise into your work day is to turn your real breaks into "revitalization" breaks. Bring your walking shoes and take a quick walk. It doesn't matter if you're indoors or outdoors as long as you talk at a moderate pace for 10 minutes. That is enough time to get your heart rate up and you won't even break a sweat in your work clothes. Use this time to reduce your stress level or invite your co-workers for a little social time! You'll all benefit from your daily work walks!
Don't be a Couch Potato!

No, this doesn't mean that you can't watch television. We all do it! It does mean that you should utilize those boring commercial breaks to add in some exercise. Take a "physical break" from television and climb your stairs a few times, lift some light weights or do some stretching.

Use wireless headphones and watch television while you're working out on your exercise equipment if you just can't miss that show! Also, be creative with the things you can do at home to combat a dormant lifestyle and get moving! Have a push mower? Use it instead of riding around on your rider mower next time you need to mow the lawn. You'll thank yourself later!

Use these tips to incorporate exercise into your busy schedule. You'll find that taking the time to get a little exercise in throughout the day will help you in your fitness plan and help you relieve stress. The benefits will always outweigh the drawbacks in the long run. You CAN fit fitness into your busy schedule and live a healthier lifestyle!

Hence an ideal weight loss solution for your child is required to help them from avoiding various kinds of risks and injuries. The weight loss for children is usually one of the most ignored forms of obesity. The main causes for this is that most parents think that they would eventually lose weight as they grow older and this has proven be one of the biggest mistakes made by family members and parents.

Some of the major causes of obesity in children include factors like sedentary lifestyles and diets, with junk.

A vital aspect here is to try and eliminate source of junk food and replace the same with healthier food options. Thus all forms of weight loss supplements should be avoided and use natural methods for weight loss instead of any forms of medicines or machines.

Mental Health and Fitness

When addressing fitness we must go beyond the boundaries of the physical body to encompass the entire being. This should include the mental, emotional and energical dimensions of one’s being. One cannot consider himself totally healthy if he is mentally declining, emotionally unstable or energetically unbalanced.

We can ascertain aberrations within each dimension through self-examination. Once detected, we can implement the proper protocol to alleviate the condition. It is said that "an ounce on prevention is worth a pound of cure". As we focus on mental health today, we’ll direct our attention to preventing mental melt down and keeping the mind sharp and fit.

A de-conditioned mind can exhibit symptoms from poor memory, slow thinking and difficulty learning to more serious problems such as Alzheimer or Parkinson’s disease. Mental fitness is therefore just as critical, if not more so (your mind controls your body), as a fit body.

The mind like the body, if not used, will begin to deteriorate, diminishing one’s longevity, independence and quality of life. Think of the mind as a muscle that requires consistent stimulation in varying ways each day to stay mentally fit. If we neglect to exercise our muscles, they become soft and weak. If we fail to use our mental muscle we become susceptible disease. It is not however predestined that one will lose his mental capacity. In fact research strongly suggests that regular physical and mental exercise can keep the mind clear, sharp and functioning optimally throughout your entire life. Begin a regimen to maintain mental vitality.

Try the following suggestions to challenge your mind, keeping it healthy and sharp:

  • Exercise your mind
  • Reduces or eliminate drug and alcohol consumption
  • Follow a regular exercise program, learn to reduce stress in your life
  • Maintain a health, holistic diet
  • After retirement choose a hobby, volunteer or work part-time (ok maybe not)

Try these mental exercises:

  • Read stimulating books and magazines
  • Do crossword puzzles
  • Do calculations in your head
  • Play board games such as trivia, chess and scrabble
  • Use your non-dominate hand to brush your teeth, comb your hair and other task
  • Test your memory with card games (old maid), name retention or grocery list
  • Use your computer for learning about new endeavors such as on-line courses, special interest, current affairs and communication with family and friends
  • Read backwards
  • Read upside down

Health-tips For Dieting

I've seen all kinds of excellent motivators when it comes to dieting and taking your dieting seriously.

One of the more common reasons is to lose weight. This is as good of a reason as any. Some want to get back into the size 5 jeans they wore in high school while others would simply like to be able to look in the mirror once again without feeling guilt. For some this is a simple matter of vanity and for others it is finally managing to deal with what has become a lifelong problem. If you find the inspiration you need to be successful with your dieting this time as opposed to others, then that is the perfectly plausible and acceptable reason for you to diet.

Other reasons for dieting include a desire to be more physically fit. Some of us have a deep and abiding desire to live as long as possible and firmly believe that the best possible method for accomplishing this goal is to live the healthiest life possible. This is another excellent reason for losing weight and getting into shape. If it works for you that is. The thing to remember is that every person is going to have to find their very own motivation deep within.

Yet another great reason is to have the energy you need to keep up with your little ones. This is one of the most heartbreaking side effects for most when it comes to obesity. There is simply no energy left over at the end of the day to enjoy doing things with your precious little ones who are young for such a very short amount of time. You desperately want to be able to build those precious memories with them but absolutely have no energy with which to do so. If that isn't bad enough you probably (if you are considered morbidly obese) have noticed that many of the simplest activities with your children often bring you physical pain that is the direct result of your weight.

Revenge is a dish that is best served cold and another excellent motivator for some when it comes to dieting and taking off those pesky pounds. Losing a great deal of weight takes time in many cases so you must be able to maintain your motivation even when things are going rough along the way. The path to a new body is not an easy path. This is for those who have some serious emotional healing to do and the best revenge for old slights and wounds is to come back more beautiful than ever before. If this motivation is what it takes for you to take off the pounds then this is the motivation to which you should cling.

Religion is another common weight loss motivation. Some people believe the body should be treated as a temple. There is nothing wrong with this philosophy at all, though it takes some us longer to find our way to that line of thinking than others. Religion and faith are powerful motivators, as they have been known to bring healing to those in need by the power of their faith or their prayers. If your faith can give you the will power and strength you need in order to reach your dieting and weight loss goals then by all means lean on your faith and hold it close.

No matter what motivation you have for dieting and losing weight if you find it is no longer working for you, then you need to find another motivator quickly. Without proper motivation it is quite unlikely that you will ever meet your weight loss goals.

Health-Tips For "Running" Exercise

Running is as old as humankind itself but unfortunately it is not a regular exercise activity for many beginners. Those who live in the world's most modern cities with all the amenities to take care of all their needs, rarely think about it. Human feet are the miracle of nature's engineering system and no other thing in the world is as useful as human feet. It is never too late to start running but if you have rediscovered your capability for running then certain precautions and tips are necessary so that one feels to continue with the exercise. It has been seen that many enthusiastic runners take to running but seem to leave it soon because they do not follow simple and easy tips. There are many health benefits of running and one of them is that it is a great cardiovascular activity that makes the heart stronger.

The common benefits of running can be summed as;
  • Increased cardiovascular activity
  • Good stretching exercise for the whole body
  • Better supply and circulation of oxygen in the body
  • Better blood circulation in the body
  • Running as stress buster
Beginner Running Tips
If one has started taking running exercises lately, then they must remember certain things so as not to be deterred from pursuing the activity. The popular beginner running tip stresses on the fact that one should not jump hastily and start running for a long distance . The beginner must start running for short distances and then go on increasing the activity as one gets used to it. Let the body adjust to the new activity otherwise one may experience pain and cramps in the body and this will prevent the beginner from continuing with the activity. The beginner should start running slowly and increase the speed as the body gets used to it.

The second and most useful tip for those who want to start running is to have a good pair of shoes that will help you in protecting your feet from getting injured. The shoes must be close fitting and Shorts, socks designed specially for running, a bra for ladies, are some other things that a beginner must have while starting out on the running exercise. The level of water in the body decreases when one is running and one may feel dehydrated so a water bottle is a must while running. A must avoid thing for beginners in running is not to overstretch one's capacity.
Precaution Tips for Beginners For the beginners in running there are some really useful precautionary tips that they must pay attention to lest they may get injured. The basic health tip for the running beginners is that one should drink plenty of water. Use a powdered sports drink rather than a premixed one.

When you have started running it does not mean that you have got the license to eat as many dough nuts as you want. Those who take to running do put on weight. If you are planning to run for a longer distance then eating an hour is the best way to keep the body sufficiently energized. In order to prevent the skin from rashes while running one can use Vaseline or other such cream so that the skin rubbing is minimum. If there is any injury while running one should ice it immediately and there can be immediate relief.
Tips for Staying Motivated Staying motivated is the key to keep yourself focused and continue with the running exercise. A beginner in running can take part in a race when there is enough preparation. A partner in running can as well be a source of motivation for the beginner because it becomes hard for the runner to avoid any running exercise when the partner is ready to go.
Reading and discussing things about running with friends helps in good motivation for the beginner. Even if the weight doesn't come down immediately after one has taken to running it is alright, patience and dedication always pay off in the long run.

The Spa Of Your Inner Mind

You're Ready for Advanced Hypnosis
You've been to hypnotists and are ready to continue the work on your own. You do not want anyone else guiding your work, you want to be in charge. You want a way to make your experience unique each time, tailored to your immediate needs. There is a way to do that, and it is called The Spa of Your Inner Mind.

Guided Imagery Gets To Be Just Too Guided
The suggestions hypnotists make are limited, typically by the limitations of the hypnotists themselves, that is to say, by their preconceived notions. And it is common for advanced enthusiasts of inner work to reach a point where they are ready to take on all of the reins themselves. If you are at that point, read on.

Create The Spa of Your Inner Mind
Drop down into a nice, comfy level and trance and create your own personal, private place of healing, transformation, insight and change. Think of it as a healing resort. Design your Spa in any way you like. Some folks choose the beach, others choose the mountains, some like the country, some like the city. It is your Spa. Choose wherever you like.

Your Spa Includes a Building and Grounds
The building can be large or small, modern or old fashioned, whatever suits your tastes. The grounds can be lush or sparse, may contain gardens or streams, can be woods or sandy shores. How it looks is only limited to your personal likes.

Your Building Contains Special Rooms
The names of the rooms reflect the activities you undertake inside them. The most common one is the Healing Room, and it is used for any kind of healing, whether emotional, physical, spiritual, or so forth. The next most useful room is the Insight Room, and you will enter there to get insight into your circumstances.

Another favorite room is called the Room of Detoxification, and it goes beyond the mere removal of physical toxins, since it is equally good for removing emotional negativity. The next big favorite is the Dead Genius Cafe, where you have access to the greatest minds of all time, all happy to consult with you upon whatever issues you choose. Lastly, a delightful way to end your Spa visit is by choosing either the Fun Room or the Play Room so you can have a few moments of simple enjoyment. All rooms expand in size or alter in any way at any time to augment your experience. You simply enter the room, and have the experience.

Additional Rooms Are Limited Only by Your Intention
You can create rooms especially for yourself. A few examples include the Room of Making Peace with The Past, the Vengeance Room, the Forgiveness Room, and the Room of Curing (place name of illness here). Simply choose an issue you want to work on, create a room with that name, enter it, and have the experience you most need to have at that time within the parameters you have set yourself.

It Is Never the Same Experience Twice
Let us use the Healing Room as our example. Perhaps one time you need to heal a broken heart, the next time you need to heal a stubbed toe, and the next you want to heal your relationship with God. All of these and more are possible. Your own subconscious mind will create whatever you need at that time in accordance with your intention. And this goes for every room you enter. You go inside and your experience unfolds for you, uniquely.

The One Big Rule
You have all the power at your Spa. What you say goes at your Spa at all times. At the speed of thought, anything you need is there for you, including people, facilities, equipment, and spiritual entities such as angels, spirit guides, or departed loved ones with whom you need to communicate. It is your Spa, and you have all the power here at all times.

Is There an Easier Way?
Yes, there is an easier way. "The Spa of Your Inner Mind" CD takes you through all the steps in under an hour, combining music, narration, and detailed instructions. You are able to experience your own Spa Rooms privately, in your own time, in your own home. The Rooms included are Healing, Insight, Detox, the Dead Genius Cafe, and then your choice of either the Fun or the Play Room. Welcome to a breakthrough in hypnosis technique, one in which you tailor your experience to your own needs each and every time you visit The Spa of Your Inner Mind.

Quit Smoking In 7 Easy Ways

Another year, another beginning.

For those among us who seemed to have just had it and kept smoking on top of their New Year's resolution list of things to banish for years, it's not too late to do so. Better late than never as that saying goes. But before it is too late, and I mean REALLY late, here are a number of ways to do to start kicking that puff addiction.

1.
Learn new skills or hobbies. Since your mind is set to smoke in your idle time, for sure there could still be a thousand things out there you could engage yourself in to preoccupy yourself.

2.

Create a diversion. Most working professionals specially now of booming call center industries, majority of whom working on graveyard shifts, have formed the habit of smoking as a means to keep awake. Try to find other methods that will work for you like taking a walk during your break or get busy with other co-workers who hopefully don't have formed smoking as a habit to bide by time as well. There may be a high chance however that your peers are not always "smoke-free" which then takes me to tip number 3.

3.
If your peer group makes it difficult to quit, learn to say no or to not give in to temptation. The thing about habits is that usually, psychological and social influence steps in. When people you are commonly with do something frequently, the tendency is to join the bandwagon. So if you really are determined to stop what you know by joining your friends would only make it difficult to shun, then avoid being in the presence of people who are in the practice of this habit. This is not always the case though of course so if it can't be helped to be in the company of people who smoke, then be on guard of yourself to partake. It's just like going on a diet, when everyone else is taking platefuls of servings one after another in a dinner buffet, how could you resist grabbing more than what you can eat? You suddenly remember you have to keep track of your calorie intake lest you won't lose those extra pounds.

4.

Alter your palate. If your mouth just have gotten used to smoking, try substituting sweets like candies or drinks to satisfy the craving.

5.
Seek moral and medical support. Let your friends and family members know that you are on the road to smoke-rehabilitating yourself so they wouldn't smoke around you or lure you of doing it by any other means. Consult your doctor and maybe he/she could advise other ways you could do to abstain or if there are programs he/she could recommend to assist you. Do so also to assess your physical condition and to see if smoking hasn't done any alarming damage (which we all hope not) to your body yet.

6.

Set a quit date. It's like getting on a personal journey, you foresee yourself getting from point A to B within a target date. By giving yourself a time frame to carry out your goal, you'll be more determined to actually make it a reality.

7.
Be prepared for difficulty and most definitely a relapse. Do not quit on quitting when you have smoked a stick after you have told yourself you wouldn't anymore. When you have violated your rules, learn to forgive and forget and most certainly to start anew.

Try This tings out.. U Can definately do that easily..!!!

--Stress Can Lead To Anxiety

.

Do you know what stress is and is it always a problem? Well the answer is NO, stress is not a problem to us if it is present in small amount, well in that case it is good for our mind and body as it keeps them awake. But the problem starts to creep in when the stress crosses the barrier that is set for a safe working mechanism of the body and then it starts to show some drastic effects which only some individual can bear. Those who can bear it are mentally tough and those who lie on their knees in front of excessive stress are not so tough. But what is the limit that one can put on the stress amount so that it remains a motivation and doesn’t become a vague pressure.

Let us take a look on it:

Normally the stress keeps on building up and is released periodically once the work that was causing the stress is done. The problem starts to creep in when the stress is not released and then it can lead to high degree of anxiety and finally to depression. This is called unconstructive stress for the body. At that time there is no motivation to do work; else there is a fear that if the work is not done then it may become fatal. Then suddenly our behavior starts to change towards the people that surround us and we start to become more aggressive in life. The concentration power tends to get lost and we cannot sit at place thinking about one goal. Under such situation the most simple tasks become complex and we seem to get entangled in them, all this due to excessive stress.

Medical science has been researching on the fact that does stress lead to anxiety and eventually depression and the results are staggering. Under most of the cases when a person is made to face excessive stress, the result was depression change from normal behavior. This shows that human race is going no where with this excessive stress and it is only getting damages from it. Now the question arises that if we all know the ill effects of excessive stress then why on the first hand we indulge into it. This is because of the increasing competition in the market. Today a common man wants to overtake his ir her colleague or business rival for money or praise. In this race to compete we usually neglect our basic need to rest and this result in excessive stress.

To lead a happy life we all need to relax a bit and run away from these stresses. To decrease the negative impact of stress in life is to learn ways to tackle it and not eliminate the stress source. You will eliminate one source of stress and the second will be there waiting for you, thus the only way out is to learn how to get along with stress and how to work under pressure. By learning to control stress in life, you can learn to be happy under any situation.

Stress Can Be Seen By Looking Your Skin

It seems itchy skin, blotches and rashes now increasingly figure on the list of lifestyle diseases that afflict young urban professionals. Typically, a stressful life (coupled with sedentary habits) is seen as a causative factor for a host of ailments—from hormonal imbalance to hypertension. Skin disorders now figure alongside these health issues as more people turn to dermatologists with problems ranging from adult acne to pigmentation.
Itching with anxiety?
“Stress is responsible for many skin problems, including conditions such as dermatitis, where one develops a rough, dry, scaly dark patch, which is highly persistent and itchy,” says Charulata Bose, consultant dermatologist, Artemis Health Institute, Gurgaon.

Dr Bose recalls a 25-year-old marketing professional (name withheld to protect patient’s privacy) whose new job entailed long hours and tough working conditions, including a difficult boss. “Within three months, she noticed very severe hair fall,” Dr Bose says. As often happens in skin-related disorders, the hair fall further exacerbated her stress. By the time she came to Dr Bose, her scalp was showing. She was treated with nutritional supplements—“We had to pump in antioxidants into her system to help negate the effect of stress,” says Dr Bose—then a three-month treatment to regenerate hair, followed by topical applications for hair growth.

“Urbanites today are ageing faster than previous generations, with issues such as ageing skin, wrinkles, dark circles and hair loss emerging as common complaints in the age group between 25 and 40 years,” says Pakhi Pereira, consultant dermatologist, Kaya Skin Clinic, Bangalore.
Is it your work?
Take the case of 27-year-old Savita Lakshman, a public relations consultant who found that her work routine had triggered a bout of adult acne that left her with scars. Lakshman has been treated by dermatologists at Kaya Skin Clinic for over four years now, starting with a year-long course of glycolic peels combined with treatments for acne and scar reduction. Lakshman now follows a rigorous routine of skin protection coupled with adequate fluid intake to protect her skin.
“In traditional societies, the physical activity involved in (the) daily routine would release endorphins that helped people de-stress,” says Pereira. “These days, the combined effect of less physical work and long hours spent indoors shows on the skin.” She also lists higher pollution and exposure to ultraviolet radiation as triggers.

A 12-hour workday leaves 28-year-old Rashmi Panwar with little time. As early as her first year in a new job, Panwar, a retail and real estate consultant in New Delhi, realized that stress at work was taking a toll, leaving her with habitual dark circles and dull, uneven skin. There was little time for remedial action until two years ago, though, when she found the first signs of pigmentation: dark freckles on her earlier clear skin. “I realized it was time to seek help to prevent further damage to my skin, which was reflecting the fatigue that was bottled up,” says Panwar, who has been treated with photo facials to reduce the pigmentation. She now combines regular skincare and twice-a-week yoga sessions with a personal trainer to help her destress.
Dermatologists recommend holistic treatments to soothe stressed-out skin. “I use a combination of skin procedures such as microdermabrasion and peels along with procedures such as colon hydrotherapy to detoxify the skin,” says Simal Soin, dermatologist, Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi. She sees an increasing number of patients in the 30-50 age group with skin disorders.
Recent research also points to stress as a trigger for skin ailments. After all, the skin is the first level of defence against infections, both as a physical barrier and as a site for white blood cells to battle invading bacteria and viruses. But these white blood cells can also overreact to stress, resulting in inflamed skin (as with dermatitis), according to a study published in the November issue of American Journal of Pathology. “Knowing the cause actually helps remove half the problem. A little help from the dermatologist can go a long way in taking care of, and reversing, skin disorders,” says Dr Bose.
Destress first, then treat
“Mental stress can exacerbate chronic skin conditions such as psoriasis and give rise to allergies, so it is important to understand what is causing the stress before we treat the skin,” says Pereira, who recommends medical treatment along with counselling to help a person identify the cause of stress and find ways to combat it.
Shiv K. Sharma, senior chief medical officer, department of skin and STD at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, New Delhi, agrees. “Stress should be managed before taking up the treatments of (the) above-mentioned elements for long-lasting effect. One should follow a regular routine of sleeping and eating, with a sufficient intake of fruits and vegetables. Exercising at least four-five times a week is most helpful. If stress is not addressed, the stress-induced diseases can progress to psycho-pathological disorders like neurotic excoriations (unconscious picking, digging and scraping of skin) or trichotillomania (the abnormal urge to pull out one’s own hair from the scalp, eyebrows or beard, or even eyelashes),” he says.

Alert
Wash your hands, folks—especially you, ladies. A study funded by the US National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, published in November, found women have a greater variety of bacteria on their hands than men. The researchers suggest it may have to do with the acidity of skin (men generally have more acidic skin than women). Other possibilities include differences in sweat and oil gland production, the frequency of moisturizer or cosmetics application, skin thickness or hormone production, the researchers say. Household linen, clothes, mats dipped in ayurvedic herbs and dyed with vegetable colours are all part of a clothing line, Ayurvastra, that is retailed at the Niraamaya store in Fort Kochi (ayurvastraonline.com). The concept of herbal medicines infused in clothing and linen that people come in contact with is an idea that originates from the ayurvedic system of medicine. According to ayurveda exponents, the benefits of clothes infused with medicinal herbs are more pronounced during periods of repose, the reason why the ayurvastra line of clothing includes nightwear, mats and bedcovers. habits can permanently alter DNA. Australian researchers found that cells showed the effects of a one-off sugar hit by switching off genetic controls designed to protect the body against diabetes and heart disease. “We now know that chocolate bar you had this morning can have very acute effects, and those effects can continue for up to two weeks,” says lead researcher Sam El-Osta of Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute. Poor eating would amplify the effect, he adds, with genetic damage lasting months or years, and potentially passing through bloodlines. AFP

Fitter In Just 10 Minutes

Ideally, you should ensure that you are out of breath for an hour a day, every day. However, exercise needn’t be an all-or-nothing venture. Just 10 minutes on a treadmill or stationary bicycle make a significant difference. You may not lose weight or lower your blood pressure, but you will end up aerobically fitter—and your waistline could get smaller (belly fat is linked to insulin resistance, contributing to heart disease and diabetes). You could also try:
• Working around the house or in the garden
• Swimming
• Playing in the park with children
• Brisk walking

More power to your stride
Walking can burn calories faster than a jog. Even better is power walking:
• Aim for 4.5mph.
• Long strides are tiring. Take quick, heel-ball-toe steps.
• Bend elbows and swing arms to help you walk faster.
• Can’t sustain the pace? Add speed bursts to your walk.
Elastic strength
Forget machines and weights. A simple elastic band lets you stretch and train for strength, balance and agility, at near-zero risk of injury. Anyone can use resistance bands (even children or seniors). At a one-time cost of Rs1,000 each, they are much cheaper than gym fees for a family, and can work most muscles.

--Obesity Treatement

Obesity has risen to epic proportions in the US. Unfortunately, there is no typical treatment or medicine that would cure it within a short period. Numerous treatments for obesity have failed as more than medicines, diet control and exercise is needed. Many of the obese people were unable to follow these treatments and as a result suffered serious consequences.

However, there are other treatments of obesity to control weight that include either surgery such as the Lap-band surgery or a change in life style supported by medicines.

Various Treatments Of Obesity

Surgery

Lap-Band surgery is the most effective treatment for obesity. It has had its share of success and aims to reduce the size of the digestive tract so that a person does not feel as hungry as s/he ordinarily would. As a result they would consume less food that would lead to weight loss.

In contrast to this approach, a change in life style is needed, one that emphasizes on eating less and exercising more.

Medicines

Medicines are given to obese people to help them reduce their huge appetites. There are no serious side effects of such medicines and they simply lower the appetite level that leads to lesser consumption of food. New medicines are being worked out in this regard because of the research unearthing the action of enzymes and other chemicals in one’s appetite.

Two of the medications sold in the US are very effective for obesity. Though they are not known to be harmful to anyone, it is suggested that one adhere to doctor’s advice regarding dosage.

Sibutramine (Meridia)

It is a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved medicine for treating obesity. It is given to individuals whose weigh 30 pounds more than their normal weight. According to clinical data, obese people lost 5 to 10% weight using Meridia. It even helps to maintain the weight loss achieved by its use.

Meridian works on hunger pangs i.e. it is controls the hunger enzymes ensuring that the individual feels less hungry. This automatically results in less consumption of food.

One of the reported side effects of this medicine is high blood pressure. People taking anti-depressant medicines should also avoid Meridia.

Orlistat (Xenical)

It is also an FDA approved medicine prescribed for those whose weight is 30% more than what it should be. It can also be taken by people who have a BMI greater than 30.

It is known that that those who take Orlistat for about a year lose 13.4 pounds, on the average. This is almost 8 pounds more than one would lose using any ordinary diet. Orlistat works by absorbing fat from the intestinal tract. Side effects of this medication include diarrhea.

Some Other Medicines to Treat Obesity

Aside from the above mentioned medicines that are used to curtail appetite, there are others too. However these are not considered safe and non-prescribed usage is not advised. They are not FDA-approved, and therefore are sold illegal as well.
These medications include the following:

  • "Phen-fen" and Redux
  • Ephedra
  • Phenylpropanolamine (PPA)

It should be remembered that the safest way to reduce obesity and eventually get rid of it means that one has to change his or her life style. This includes exercising more and eating less.

However, eating less is now supported by medications that curtail one’s appetite. As long as there are no serious side-effects, it is fine to go about losing weight and control obesity this way.

-- What Is Obesity

While every one wants to stay healthy and remain fit, yet they do not know exactly what to do to maintain good health. Very often there are people do not even know what they have to do in order to remain healthy. Some people believe that excessive eating can keep them in good shape and thus they eat as much as they can to be called healthy.

Due to this, people end up eating too much to remain healthy, not realizing that they may be consuming lots of the foods that are bad for them. The result of this overeating is obesity.

What is Obesity?

Obesity can be defined as, the condition of being obese or increased body weight caused by excessive accumulation of fat.

Obesity is a very unhealthy condition. This condition is marked by an excess amount of fat in the adipose tissues of the skin.

How Do You Become Obese?

Obesity is the result of eating too much of the wrong foods or eating well and not exercising enough. Eating too much and not exercising can have severe consequences. It can cause overweight or a severe condition known as obesity. It cannot be denied that exercise and a healthy diet go hand in hand.

If you have a big appetite but do not exercise regularly, there is every chance that you would become obese.

What Makes You Look Obese?

The amount of excessive fat in the body becomes evident after a short time. Waist line, thighs and arms are the main areas where fats deposits are visible. When one actually begins to take on a different style of walking that is really noticeable, it can be said that this individual is obese.

There are medical techniques too that can measure the amount of fat in skin as well determine obesity. However, it does not need a medical method to diagnose obesity. It becomes obvious when one’s figure is totally out of proportion.

Obesity & Overweight

A step or two lower than obesity is overweight. This condition also involves excessive weight gain. However, this situation is not as bad as obesity. It is because overweight can be controlled by cutting down on far and dieting. Exercise too is great help.

However, obesity is a very different situation and requires much more effort in order to reduce weight.

Estimating Your Health

Obesity is most apparent from the body structure and the measurement of an individual. Thus, obesity can be estimated from the exceeding waistlines and growing size of clothing. Keeping this in mind, health professionals advice that more than 40 inches or 102 cm for men is a sign of obesity. In women, waistline more than 35 inches or 88 cm is dangerous.

Obesity is not a healthy body condition. Growing weight and accumulating fat in the body can also cause dangerous health conditions like high blood pressure and heart problems. Thus, obesity is best avoided and exercise is recommended to stay fit.

--Mental Health

We Can Define Mental health as:

‘The successful performance of mental function, resulting in productive activities, fulfilling relationships with other people and the ability to adapt to change and cope with adversity; from early childhood until late life, mental health is the springboard of thinking and communications skills, learning, emotional growth, resilience and self-esteem.’

Mental health not only shapes our present but also determines our physical life and future over all health. Mental health can vary according to our circumstances and can change our life, in the same way as our physical health.

Mental health can be maintained by allowing your brain to think positively and keep an eye on how you are leading your life. After countless researches, scientists have concluded that people who always seem to be in a good mood may have naturally higher levels of endorphins (types of hormone) and the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin. These chemicals are released by the brain and make us feel good when we are enjoying ourselves or when something pleasant happens.

What Happens When Good Mental Health Is Not Maintained?

Due to any reason such as an illness or some unpleasant experience in life, mental health can get affected. Any normal person with good mental health can fall victim to mental health problems which result from a complex interaction of biological, social and psychological factors.

Mental health problems are among the most common of all health conditions, directly affecting about a quarter of the population in any one year. They range from short-term problems to serious long-term illnesses. These problems can seriously harm an individual and one may never regain the good mental health that one possessed earlier.

--Keeping Allergies at Bay

Allergies can get the best of us, with some 36 million people being irritated just by grass and tree pollen every year. Allergy-proofing your home is the first and most important step in dealing with allergies. Medication can help treat allergy symptoms only after they strike, the best way to prevent allergies all together is to keep them out of the environment you live in.

At Home

  • Keep windows closed and use air conditioning if you're allergic to pollen. The same applies when you are in the car.
  • Filter the air by covering air conditioning vents with thin cloth to keep pollen away and use a high efficiency particulate air filter (HEPA).
  • Clean air filters frequently. Also clean air ducts at least once a year.
  • Keep the humidity in your house below 50% to prevent mold growth.
  • Avoid areas where molds may collect, including basements, garages, crawl spaces, barns, and compost heaps.
  • Install dehumidifiers in basements and other areas of the house where molds tend to collect.
  • Air out damp clothes and shoes before storing.
  • Don't collect indoor plants as soil encourages mold growth.
  • Store firewood outside.
  • Use plastic covers for pillows, mattresses, and box springs.
  • Use synthetic non-allergenic pillows instead of feather pillows.
  • Do not allow smoking inside the house.
  • Vacuum twice a week.
  • Use hardwood floors instead of carpeting, as carpets attract dust and mites.

Outdoors

  • During pollination season minimize walks in wooded areas or gardens.
  • Avoid extreme temperature changes as they can trigger asthma.
  • Wear a mask while gardening, as flowers and weeds release pollen that can aggravating allergy symptoms.
  • Avoid raking leaves or working with hay.
  • Don't hang clothes or linens out to dry, as pollen and molds may collect in them.

--The Most Common Allergy

According to research, it has been determined that the most common allergy includes respiratory allergy. This may be in any form related to asthma. Generally, irritation through particular environmental factors can be blamed. Things like animal fur and pollen are the most common irritants.

Some of the other things that are likely to cause allergic reactions include:

Dust, dust mites, mold, cat and dog waste, and even foods. Foods that cause allergic reactions include: peanuts, milk and shellfish. Drugs too, such as penicillin, are known to cause reactions.

Respiratory Irritants:

There are few cases of animal matter causing allergies such as asthmatic reactions. However, asthma being one of the most common allergies may be caused by the presence of animals themselves.

To begin with, animal fur that is light and likely to fly causes a reaction. This is why there are many people who firmly believe that even keeping cats and dogs can cause asthma. Though there are arguments against such an assertion, it must be remembered that asthma can be agitated through animal fur. In addition to animal fur believed to be one of the chief causes of irritation, it is said that allergens on anim als can also cause severe reactions.

Allergies:

According to definition, an allergy is an undesired response to something. This may be a substance or an organism. However, in addition to this it is said that allergies are usually caused by protein substances, and that the body’s immune system reacts with these proteins. Based on this, it is said that the reaction one has with a substance is a disorder or not normal.

However, there seems to be a line drawn between this and asthma. Asthma that is believed to be the common allergy is triggered by other substances as well. This could be dust or other chemicals that are not necessarily protein based. They are purely irritants on their own account. Therefore, it cannot really be said that the definition fits here.

Respiratory Irritation:

Related to the asthmatic symptoms are respiratory disagreements that result because of reaction with things such as dust, dust mites, mold, and cat and dog fur. However, when respiratory irritation occurs sometimes it is due to protein substances. Normally, when an allergen enters our bodies, the immune system prepares to combat it.

Sometimes when the immune system is not prepared for it, what happens is that the allergen sets itself in. The only way to remove it is to use antibiotics. Through this means, antibiotics attack the allergen directly and cling to them. In cases where antibiotics are not needed, the body’s immune system uses its white blood cells against the allergen.

Aside from looking at common respiratory allergies on a chemical level, it must be asserted that there are other factors that influence allergies. This makes sense because of the fact that some people get affected while others don’t in a dusty environment or when pollen is around. It must be asserted that some people are more prone to being irritated in the presence of pollen because of hereditary characteristics. It is in their genes to react to certain stimulus as opposed to those that don’t.

--Importance of Walking

In an article titled, 'Stride with Pride', written by an anonymous author, one may read how important the simple exercise of walking is for all individuals. It is particular for today's generation of men as they seem to be in pursuit of a leisurely life as compared to their preceding generations.

Some of the most common and perhaps truly fruitful benefits of walking include its utility as an excellent form of transport. Walking makes an individual independent of all sorts of hassles and worries such as the rising prices of gas, public bus fares and traffic problems.

Walk Can Solve a Lot of Men's Health Problems

Walking not only helps in a better metabolism by leading to a good digestion system but also increases your appetite, thus contributing towards your better health.

Walking can solve one big issue associated with owning and keeping other transport such as a bike or even a car which is more than eliminated by walking.

Yet another benefit of walking for men is the relief one gets such as being stress free, as walking relieves an individual of most if not all the worries. In addition, the movement of limbs and arms certainly takes most of the pressure off the mind and body altogether which haunts the minds of men at all times.

Some Important Health Aspects of Walking

  • Walking helps keeping weight in check. This is particularly good for men who work long hours and have jobs which involve sitting all day long
  • Walking helps in better digestion of food. Thus, men who like to eat fried and heavy foods can compensate by walking regularly
  • Walking is a good time to talk and catch up with friends. It not only contributes towards better health of men but also leads to some leisure time

This is aside from the numerous benefits including burning extra calories, feeling happier, feeling energetic and above all the tendency to move about at a faster pace than those who lead an unhealthy life style. Thus, it can be said, that walking is very important as it can solve many of men’s health problems without costing them much.

--Allergy Tips For All Seasons

The best way to keep an allergy at bay is to avoid any contact with whatever triggers your allergy. Avoid places where you know there are known allergens such as dust, dander or pollen. And if you ever get an allergy, it is always best to see a doctor and take care of it before it gets worse. Most treatments can only suppress an allergy, not cure them.

Most allergies are developed in early childhood and can last throughout one’s life, however, some people do tend to outgrow their allergies, but this is rare. Most allergies are seasonal in nature and come and go with each season. Here are a few seasonal tips for your allergies.

Winter Allergy Tips

In winter the air is usually clean and crisp, however it is also necessary to make sure that the air indoors is clean and allergy free as well.

  • Make sure you keep warm in the winter, but remember to keep all firewood outdoors as molds can develop and give rise to your allergies.
  • Keep all heating ducts and air filters clean, as dust and mites are inclined to grow here. Also make sure to change air filters on a monthly basis.
  • If you have pets, make sure that they are washed and cleaned frequently. Also restrict their living areas, do not allow them into the bed room.
  • Lastly, avoid going out in the extreme cold, as it can trigger an asthma attack. Keep your face, ears, and hands covered at all times outdoors.

Spring Allergy Tips

Spring can be an allergy sufferer’s nightmare. In spring, there is more moss and mold growth due to spring rains. The air is also filled with pollen, as new flowers, weeds and trees begin to blossom. In spring;

  • Keep pollen under control by washing your bed covers every week in hot water. Also remember to take a shower daily when you come in from outdoors. Avoid spending lots of time in the garden.
  • Make sure to vacuum and dust every week. Wear a mask and gloves while doing this so as to limit your exposure to any allergens or irritants.
  • Also wash your rugs and carpets to reduce dusts or molds from forming.
  • And finally remember to keep the air indoors clean by changing the air filters and vent coverings on a weekly basis.

--Taking Care Of Heartburn

These days with people being so busy in their lives, following no dietary routine and irregular eating habits, heartburn has become a common ailment experienced by many people. There may be a number of reasons for heartburn but with proper care and balanced diet, it can be helped.

Heartburn occurs when the stomach acid comes back to the esophagus pipe, which carries food to the stomach and causes pain. The stomach acid helps in the digestion of food but due to the loosening of sphincter of esophagus, the stomach acid travels back and causes heartburn. It may be caused by a number or reasons. The esophagus does not contain the protective lining present in the stomach and thus pain is felt when it happens.

How Does Heartburn Take Place?

Various life styles and dietary factors are the reasons which allow the stomach acid to retreat into the esophagus sphincter causing heartburn. They are:

  • The increased amount of acid produced in the body
  • The increasing pressure on stomach that allows the acid to flow back
  • Making esophagus sensitive to acid
  • Eating greasy or non healthy foods that take time in digesting and cause heartburn
  • Eating too many citrus fruits and eating foods full of acid such as garlic and raw onions, vinegar and spicy foods.
  • Eating immediately before going to sleep
  • Taking certain medications that have side effects which causes heartburn
  • Being over weight and obese
  • Smoking too much or eating too much tobacco
  • Hectic lifestyle with no time for relaxation or rest

Taking Care of Heartburn

Taking care of heartburn is necessary. If proper care and treatment is not taken on time, it may complicate matters causing further complications.

Some of the ways for taking care of heartburn are:

  • Healthy diet should be taken. Greasy and fatty foods such as deep fried and high cholesterol foods should be avoided
  • Too much alcohol or colas should be avoided, instead green tea should be taken
  • Foods should be eaten boiled or grilled, vegetables in raw or steamed form are good for heartburn
  • Smoking should be limited or entirely avoided
  • Food should be eaten some hours before going to bed. At night low fat and calorie food should be preferred
  • The end of the bed, where you rest your head should be heightened a bit so as to ensure that the flow of acid does not reaches the esophagus
  • Avoid too much spicy or fast foods
  • Try to maintain a balanced weight as it also helps in preventing heartburn
  • Wear loose clothing that does not put a pressure on your stomach

Taking care of heartburn is not easy as one has to watch their lifestyle as well as the diet that they ingest. However, it can be done with a little care and concentration on what you eat and drink.

--How Smoking Can Cause Heartburn

Smoking Can Cause Heartburn

Heartburn is a feeling of pain or sensation of burning in the chest and mainly caused by the indigestion of food. There are several other causes that may lead to heartburn, one of them being cigarette smoking. Smoking not only leads to blockage of windpipe due to smoke and acid but also leads to production of acid that leads to heartburn.

Heartburn Related To Smoking

Heartburn is experienced when the food reaches the stomach for digestion. However, due to some reasons, the acid that helps in the digestion come back into the esophagus and causes pain as the esophagus has no protective lining like stomach. The flow of stomach acid into the esophagus may be caused by a variety of reasons. Over eating and too much greasy food that takes a long time to digest may lead to heartburn.

Smoking can cause many problems and heartburn is one of them. The symptoms of heartburn include pain in the chest, sour taste in the back of the mouth and acid regurgitation. Too much smoking means too much inhalation of tobacco and thus, it blocks the windpipe and leads to heartburn. The effects of smoking on heartburn can be reversed by giving up smoking.

How Does Smoking Cause Heartburn?

  • Saliva contains bicarbonate, a compound that helps in neutralizing the stomach acid. It has been found that smokers produce 50% less saliva than non smokers. Thus, its takes longer for esophagus to clear the acid in smokers and thus, they experience heartburn more than other people.
  • Also due to smoking, the esophagus pipe is blocked and it takes more time for the food to reach the stomach which results in heartburn.
  • Smoking also relaxes the ring around the esophagus that allows the stomach acid to come up and cause heartburn.

How to Avoid Heartburn Caused by Smoking

The only thing to do to avoid heartburn while you are smoking is to stop smoking. It has been found that people who limited smoking, experienced less heartburn. Thus, giving up smoking is the only way to avoid heartburn.

People who smoke very frequently are more likely to have heartburn rather than people who do not smoke. The only way to get rid of heartburn is to quit smoking and take a healthy diet.
